upanProton is a Malaysian automotive company that was established in 1985 as the country’s national car manufacturer. The company initially produced rebadged versions of Mitsubishi vehicles, but has since expanded to include locally engineered and badge engineered vehicles.
Proton has a presence in at least 15 countries, primarily in Asia, and has its headquarters in Shah Alam, Selangor. In the 2000s, Proton became the 11th country in the world to design cars from the ground up.
The company was originally owned by HICOM and Mitsubishi, but was fully acquired by DRB-HICOM in 2012. In 2017, DRB-HICOM announced plans to sell a 49.9% stake in Proton and a 51% stake in Lotus, which was formerly a unit of Proton, to Geely Automobile Holdings.
